Summer Learning Journey – Origami fish

Today for Summer Learning Journey our task was to  make an origami fish. There were two types of origami fish that we could make, the first one was just a simple fish, and the other was a koi fish which was the harder one, I chose to make the koi fish becuase I like challenges.

I liked this activity because I personally think that it helped me improve my origami skills.

Summer Learning Journey – A wanted poster

For the Summer Learning Journey kickstart I started which was where you create a ‘Wanted’ poster about the Stonefish.

For my poster I thought that making the text red because it looks bold and it stands out.

We learnt facts about the Stonefish. Heres 3 facts  that I learnt.

  • It is the 3rd most dangerous fish in the world
  • Stonefish blend in with rocks underwater
  • They can hunt their prey really fast                                I enjoyed this activity becuase I like learning about animals and the ocean.

Hauora

For Inquiry, we learnt about Hauora. Hauora is the 4 walls of well being. There is Taha Tinana (physical well-being), Taha Hinengaro (mental and emotional well-being), Taha Wairua (spiritual well-being), Taha Whanau (social well-being).

Taha Wairua is the spiritual well being and it helps with the connection with your religous and helps that bond grow stronger.

Taha Whanau is about the people that matter to you, like your family, friends, and community. Taha Whanau is about strengthening relationships within families, and caring for others.

Taha Tinana is the physical well being, and is one of the four walls connected to the other three walls. Taha Tinana is about maintaining your physical health by burning fat and fueling your body.

Taha Hinengaro is one of the 4 walls of well being. This wall is associated with mental and emotional well being. It is creating a sense of fair play and is expressing your thoughts and feelings. When this wall falls, athletes lose the ability to think and make good choices.

I enjoyed doing this task because I learnt what the 4 walls meant their meaning of it, this helped me understand the basic of walls and their well-being.

Challenge: Underwater transport

Our school started using a new website in class, Adobe Express. Our task was to expirament with the new website, and we learnt how to generate images, we were then given a challenge to generate an AI image of underwater transport, we had to  use 5 prompts and used BAR.  BAR stands for bigger, add, and replace. We did this to create our own AI generated image of underwater transport. My promts were “underwater colourful glittery train, pastel colours, fish and mermaids, with dolphins, and bright ocean”

I enjoyed this activity because I liked the outcome of my picture and I thought that it was ironic.

Kingi Tuheitia and Kuini Nga Wai Hono I Te Po

Earlier this year the king of Aotearoa, Kingi Tuheitia passed away, because of this, his youngest daughter Kuini Nga Wai Hono I te Po was given the role of the queen of Aotearoa. Our task was to create a DLO about the passing of Kingi Tuheitia and how he brought unity during his reign as the Maori King. The Kingi Tuheitia movement was to unite and bring people together. A few reasons why he did this was to preserve the Māori culture and language, and to bring peace, friendship, and respect between iwi’s and tribes in the Māori culture. We think that Kuini Nga Wai Hono i te po will carry on her father’s legacy by continuing to preserve the Māori culture and language, and to spread the word of unity around the world. We think Kuini Nga Wai Hono i te po will continue to acknowledge success and the Cook Island legacy of building a marae on Aitutaki, what her father Kingi Tuheitia had wanted.

I found this activity interesting because I learnt how Kingi Tuheitia brought unity to our country

Different cultures in our kura

For inquiry our focal point is cultures. We found all of the cultures in Panmure Bridge school and we put them in a pie chart. This pie chart shows that out of all 209 students in panmure bridge. majority of them identify as Maori, Tongan, or Samoan. 66 students in our school are Maori(31.4% of students), 38 students are Tongan(18.1% of students), and 22 are Samoan (10.5% of students). After that we came up with ways for students to value all of the cultures in our school. My idea what that we could learn about different cultural celebrations and the story behind them, I used diwali as an example.

I enjoyed this activity because one of the things I am interested in is different cultures.

Why is sleeping important?

For writing we learnt about the importance of sleep. We did this activity in groups and we found out the effects of not getting enough sleep and the effects of getting too much sleep. I found out that there were different sleeping disorders, one that piqued my interest was hypersomnia. Hypersomnia is a sleeping disorder where a person could sleep for a big amount of time and still wake up feeling tired.

I enjoyed this activity because it made me realize that sleep plays a big part in our lives and it helped me fix my sleeping schedule.

Duffy birthday celebration

Recently Panmure Bridge School celebrated 30 years of  The Alan Duff  charitable foundation, AKA Duffy books in homes. In 1992, Alan Duff visited a school in Hastings, noticing that this school didn’t have any books to read home, he also found out that majority of kids in Aotearoa at the time came from homes without books. Reading books grants people with a good imagination, it can take us to whole new world, and it gives us more interests, something that these kids didn’t have. Alan wanted to find a solution to this problem, he knew it was important for kids to grow up with books and to love them. In 1994, Duffy was born, and more then 14 million books have been given to kids throughout Aotearoa for the past 30 years! Reading can help kids, it expands out vocabulary and it gains their knowledge. Panmure bridge school joined the Duffy books in homes system in 1999, and for the past 25 years kids in PBS have had the chance to get 8 books every year.

To celebrate this, all classes in our school made and decorated our own boxes which we could take home to put our books in. All classes in our school also got to design their own party hats which they wore at the celebration, and like every birthday party, we had a big cake which was shared throughout the school. The painting crew, known as Keira, Siniva, Dalilah, Armani and Bethany, created and painting a large Duffy.

We read a text about Rosie Ruiz, a woman who cheated in the Boston marathon and faked her victory.  When we do reading, I will always predict what I think the text will be about, it is important to have a reasoning for your prediction. After I do this, I would find a partner who would ask me a question about my prediction, then I would answer them. While doing this, we worked collaboratively with our group, this helped us learn that working individually could be difficult.
